On Thursday, October 24, an Oklahoma County jury found Toyota Motors Corp. guilty of reckless disregard. The jury heard a case where one Oklahoma woman, Jean Bookout, was injured and another Oklahoma woman, Barbara Schwarz, died after the Camry that they were in crashed after sudden acceleration.
The jury awarded Jean Bookout $1.5 million and the family of Barbara Schwarz $1.5 million for damages related to the car accident. Safety advocate, Sean Kane said that the trial will hopefully protect consumers by keeping Toyota from releasing mechanically defective vehicles in the future.
