An off-duty police officer was heading home after his shift last Wednesday when he was involved in a serious collision. The 31-year-old was traveling on Interstate 94 in an eastbound lane, when a wrong-way driver slammed into his vehicle head-on.
The wrong-way driver, a 23-year-old, was determined to have been under the influence of alcohol at the time of the severe car accident. The drivers had to be extracted from their vehicles, and both suffered life-threatening injuries.
Citations were distributed to the careless driver, and they included operating while intoxicated, driving the wrong way, and reckless driving that caused harm. The highway lanes were closed for nearly four hours while emergency personnel worked on the scene.
