The general public has become overwhelmed by product recalls in the United States. On average, each day in 2011 6.5 products were recalled nationwide.
According to the FDA, in 2011 there were 2,363 recalls announced involving food products, consumer products, and pharmaceuticals. That number rose by 14 percent from the previous year, 2010, where 2,081 recalls were recorded.
This year alone there have already been hundreds of recalls across the country. These recalls have included Dole salad mix, IKEA high chairs, and birth control pills. Consumers are beginning to ignore the recalls, according to a 2009 Rutgers study, and regulators are looking for new ways to spread the word on these recalls to the mass public.
