Florida patient suffers brain damage, wins malpractice suit

Posted on Monday, January 30th, 2012 at 10:48 pm

In 2007 an active deputy in Jacksonville, Florida wanted to shed some pounds in order to cease health problems that he had started to develop. The man had a young family and needed a weight-loss option that would allow him to be around for his children.

Gastric bypass surgery was the option that he selected and in March 2007 he entered Memorial Hospital to have the procedure performed. Several days later the man left the hospital with irreparable brain injuries. These injuries were so severe that he can no longer get through an entire day on his own and he is restricted to a wheel chair.

The medical malpractice lawsuit was filed against the hospital and it’s doctors involved in the surgery. The jury highly favored the Florida man, now 32-years-old, and awarded him and his family $177 million.

Traffic fatalities under 600 in 2011

Posted on Monday, January 9th, 2012 at 6:34 pm

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation has announced that for the fourth consecutive year, traffic fatalities in the state have been under 600. The last time that this happened in Wisconsin was between 1924 and 1927.

In 2011, 569 people died in car accidents across the state of Wisconsin. In 2010, there were 562 fatalities, but the 2011 amount is still lower than the five-year average by 59 deaths.

Motorcycle accidents dropped as well in 2011. There were 85 motorcyclists who lost their lives in 2011, compared to 103 who died in 2010. Although, it is a good thing that the number of traffic fatalities is on the decline, there are still numerous fatalities that can be avoided if people are more aware of their surroundings on the road.

Starbucks customer receives $7.5 million in lawsuit verdict

Posted on Wednesday, January 4th, 2012 at 5:56 pm

A slip and fall lawsuit against Starbucks has resulted in a $7.5 million payout for the victim. The accident happened in 2008 at a Starbucks located in San Diego.

The customer lost his balance while walking to the pick-up counter after paying for his drink. The area where he was walking had just been mopped by the store’s manager. The man fell on the slick floor and sustained injuries to his head. As a result of these injuries he was not able to immediately return to work as a chiropractor.

The jury in the case determined that Starbucks owed the slip and fall victim $7.5 million. This amount also factors in the $1 million awarded to the victim’s wife for losing certain aspects of their relationship due to her husband’s injuries.
