How do hospitals try to prevent prescription errors?

Posted on Thursday, April 8th, 2010 at 2:34 am

Most hospitals handle hundreds of patients every day. For many patients, they receive multiple prescriptions during their hospital visits.

With so many prescriptions to fill, hospitals have a responsbility to ensure that prescriptions are filled and distributed properly. To control for this activity, hospitals often implement a number of checks and limits.

One of these checks is an electronic system that scans both the prescription and the patient's hospital band. If the scan confirms that the prescription is for that patient, then the nurse can give the prescription to the patient.
