Firms Fined Over Drawstrings

Posted on Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008 at 7:04 am

Eight firms have been fined $320,000 for manufacturing and selling children’s clothing that had dangerous drawstrings. The use fo drawstrings in children’s clothing has been banned for quite some time after the Consumer Products Safety Commission decided that the loose strings posed a stranguation hazard.

Reports show that there have been 17 recalls of 190,000 pieces of clothing due to the use of drawstrings in the hood or neck of the clothing. While this regulation has been in place for many years, the guidelines are often ignored, placing thousands of children in danger.

Between 1985 and 1999, the CPSC reported the deaths of 22 children and 48 non-fatal cases of clothing stranglulation.

Grounding of Thousands of Planes Causes Many to Question Airline Safety

Posted on Wednesday, April 9th, 2008 at 6:04 am

American Airlines has grounded around 1000 planes today as inspections continue for some of America’s most popular airlines. The trend began several months ago as Southwest Airlines faced a fine of 10.2 million dollars due to the findings of defective equipment on their planes. After grounding all of their Boeing 737 aircrafts, Southwest claimed to have the situation under control.

American Airlines’ inspections circle around their fleet of MD-80 jets. Although it would appear that these airlines are working hard to ensure the safety of their airplanes, it causes the public to wonder about the true safety of air travel. Cracks found in Southwest airplanes and the danger of other defective plane equipment may be too  much for many passengers to handle. While the inspections are done for our safety, it is undoubtedly concerning to think that these defective planes have been operating with serious flaws for months if not years.
