Long Island Hospital Under Investigation for Patient Deaths

Posted under Uncategorized

Mercy Medical Center, a Long Island hospital, is under fire once again after the deaths of several patients. After it was discovered that a woman who died last spring of complications following a double mastectomy had not needed the procedure in the first place, a state Health Department investigation concluded that the hospital had taken proper corrective action. However, investigators are now looking into a series of three deaths at Mercy Medical allegedly caused by a physician’s assistant. Anthony Colantonio, a doctor at Mercy Medical, raised concerns that a PA had improperly inserted catheters, chest tubes, and pacemakers into patients without authorization, resulting in complications leading to death.

A 1999 study by the Institute of Medicine and the National Academy of Sciences reported that medical error was responsible for the death of anywhere from 44,000 to 98,000 Americans every year.
