Police Use DNA to Produce Suspect

Posted on Monday, February 18th, 2008 at 6:02 am

Beloit, Wisconsin police have used DNA technology to come up with a suspect in an old sexual assault case.

In 2003, a non-adult girl was sexually assaulted. At the time, DNA evidence was collected. This evidence was put into CODIS, a database of DNA samples from crime scenes and convicted individuals. Recently, the database returned a match. The match is a convicted felon in Illinois.

Now that police think they have their man, they are working on extracting the suspect from Illinois back to Wisconsin to face trial.

If you or someone you know has been sexually assaulted, contact the Waukesha personal injury lawyers of Habush Habush & Rottier S.C. ® at 262-523-4700 to discuss your case and to schedule an initial consultation.

Delay in Trasylol Recall Cost 22,000 Lives

Posted on Friday, February 15th, 2008 at 2:02 am

Dr. Dennis Mangano, the researcher in a 2006 study which led to the eventual withdrawal of Trasylol from the market in November 2006, told CBS 60 Minutes program that 22,000 lives could have been saved, had Trasylol been recalled when he first published his results in January 2006. According to Mangano, Bayer, the manufacturer or Trasylol, failed to disclose to the FDA during an advisory panel session that it had conducted tests which confirmed Mangano’s results.

Trasylol was taken off the market after being linked to kidney failure in patients.

Long Island Hospital Under Investigation for Patient Deaths

Posted on Monday, February 11th, 2008 at 10:02 am

Mercy Medical Center, a Long Island hospital, is under fire once again after the deaths of several patients. After it was discovered that a woman who died last spring of complications following a double mastectomy had not needed the procedure in the first place, a state Health Department investigation concluded that the hospital had taken proper corrective action. However, investigators are now looking into a series of three deaths at Mercy Medical allegedly caused by a physician’s assistant. Anthony Colantonio, a doctor at Mercy Medical, raised concerns that a PA had improperly inserted catheters, chest tubes, and pacemakers into patients without authorization, resulting in complications leading to death.

A 1999 study by the Institute of Medicine and the National Academy of Sciences reported that medical error was responsible for the death of anywhere from 44,000 to 98,000 Americans every year.

When you walk into a hospital, you place your health – and your life – in the hands of its doctors and staff. When that trust is betrayed, the consequences can be devastating. If you or someone you love has suffered because of medical malpractice, a Waukesha personal injury lawyer from Habush Habush & Rottier S.C. ® can help. To learn more, call 800-559-5599 now.

Two Seriously Injured in Crash

Posted on Wednesday, February 6th, 2008 at 3:02 am

Two men were seriously injured yesterday in a crash involving a pickup truck, a pedestrian, and an SUV nearly half a mile away. Castildo Mejia, 28, was struck by the pickup while walking along the road. The truck, driven by 47-year-old Patrick Martin, did not stop, but continued erratically down the road until it rear-ended a Ford SUV about a half-mile away. Mejia suffered a shatter shoulder blade, Martin lower body fractures and a concussion. Both were taken to separate hospitals. The driver of the SUV was not hurt.

Martin was issued summons for reckless driving, failure to stop at a red light, leaving the scene of an accident, driving with a suspended registration, among other charges. Police say Martin suffers from a medical condition which may have contributed to the crash and may serve as a mitigating factor in his case.
