Dog Attacks

Dogs are known as man’s best friend for a reason: they are fiercely loyal animals that can be gentle
and caring towards an owner while also being alert and protective against potential threats. While these
are admirable qualities, dogs vary from breed to breed and even from individual dog to dog. Some dogs
have been bred to be much more aggressive than others and can act unpredictably towards people, including
the owner and the owner’s family. With keeping an aggressive dog comes the risk of a dog attack happening
in the future.

When out on a walk or otherwise out in public with a dog, an owner must take care to remain in control
at all times. Dogs can quickly sense a threat and may change temperament in a split second. While there
may not actually be any real threat around, a dog who senses a threat may lash out at another dog or
person, including a child. A dog may attack by biting or lunging at a person, knocking them to the ground,
and possibly leaving bite or scratch injuries.

While large dogs may seem to be the most at risk of attacking someone, this is not always the case.
Labrador Retrievers and Great Danes are some of the largest breeds but are known for their gentle nature.
Miniature Pinschers and Chihuahuas, however, are small in size but are far more tenacious than some
larger breeds.

Even if you believe that your dog is gentle, he or she may not act the same way towards unfamiliar people
or dogs. To be safe always keep your dog on a leash when out in public and avoid letting strangers,
especially children, approach your dog if you are unsure how your dog will react.
